We’re super excited to have worked with Melbourne Museum on the concepting of their 2019 Gut Feelings exhibition.
Gut Feelings is an upcoming new exhibition at Melbourne Museum that invites visitors on a journey through their guts to meet the trillions of microbes that call it home.
The exhibition explores new revelations that our minds, guts and microbes are inextricably linked. Upon entering the gallery space, visitors will be introduced to cutting-edge research that articulates the far-reaching impact gut microbes have on our health and wellbeing, illustrating a new level of understanding of how the human body works.
Gut Feelings has been designed to convey complicated scientific research in a simple digestible way, ensuring there are clear takeaways from each part of the exhibition.
For example, visitors will be invited to walk through a 9-metre interactive gut tunnel (the same length as your active gut) before being greeted by undulating pale pink walls, suspended sculptural forms, and an uber-tactile villi wall which, collectively, illustrate the inner workings of the digestive system.
Other experiences include three ‘magic mirrors’ that use body mapping technology to show visitors the scale of microbes in their body; an interactive touch-screen game that encourages visitors to feed their gut and look after their good microbes; and a room showing an entire years’ worth of good-for-your-guts food displayed across the walls.
Gut Feelings was curated by Dr Johanna Simkin, Senior Curator of Human Biology and Medicine at Melbourne Museum and awarded a finalist position in the 2019 Victorian Premier's Design Awards competition (Images © Museums Victoria, 2019).
